Santana shut out the sound of Mateo's voice in her earbud, her only focus being Bess Davis as she chased her into the trees. Fifteen feet away from catching up to her, she yelled, "Stop! Miss Davis!"

The President's sister didn't slow down and looked over her shoulder toward Santana in pursuit. She missed seeing the tree root in her path and tripped over it, pitching her forward. With her hands firmly secured behind her back, she landed hard on her left side. Dead spruce and fir needles softened her collision with the forest floor.

Santana kneeled beside her and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "I'm here to get you out of this place."

Hyperventilating with hair flung across her twisted face, Santana saw again the terror in her eyes. "Who the hell are you?" she gasped.

"First things first. Calm down. Try to relax."

Miss Davis curled her knees up to her chest when she saw Santana pull a knife out of her boot. Santana slipped her blade under the zip tie handcuffs, and pulled up hard, snapping the cable in two. Bess Davis rubbed her freed wrists while twisting up into a sitting position.

Santana put her hand on the woman's knee. "My name's Santana. I know you're the President's sister, Bess Davis. Those dead militia guys kidnapped you. We've gotta move now!"

Bess Davis followed Santana's gaze back into the compound. She abruptly jumped to her feet and clutched Santana's arm. "Let's go. Now!"

Santana saw the Asian leader rise from the driveway. He had seen or heard their movement. He looked down and picked his pistol off the driveway. Aiming it into the woods, he fired a round at the women. The bullet sailed well over their heads.

Grabbing the bullpup from her pack, Santana returned fire. All five Asians dove behind the dead men on the ground for cover.

"Follow me and stay close," Santana said.
